Segment 17: Opera Begins
(same scene as previous segment, but an hour or two later; it is twilight; a lamp burns in the schoolhouse; Twimfina is inside cleaning; Guru enters)
TWIMFINA
Guru. Are you okay?
GURU
Not really. But my father is safe. And you are here. So I guess I have no right to be less than happy. Father said that Ace is spending the night?
TWIMFINA
Yes, he’s inside taking a bath. It makes no sense for him to be walking back and forth from Jeeno every day.
GURU
(chuckles)
“Running” – don’t let him hear you say “walking”. Olympians don’t walk.
TWIMFINA
We should adopt him, Guru.
GURU
Father suggested the same. Maybe that’s how I should write the next part of our story.
TWIMFINA
(chuckles)
Good. You do that.
GURU
Of course I’ll still be writing interesting parts for you. Have you been satisfied with my story thus far?
TWIMFINA
(chuckles)
“Thus far”? Sure. But I should ask if you’ve been satisfied with MY story “thus far”. Because you’re in MY story too!
GURU
Excellent! A story within a story!
